TITLE:

WCDMA and HSPA - The way forward to 3G.

ABSTRACT:

From virtually no broadband subscriptions in 2000, there are now well above 400 million. In many areas of the world, broadband is already part of people's daily lives. In these new broadband-enabled societies, consumers want to have access anywhere, over any technology and through any device. Broadband offers something for everyone. Its ubiquitous nature means it will enable a true digital society - from high-growth regions to mature markets. The world of communications is evolving and the way we conduct our lives is changing. Broadband will affect everything, from the way we socialize to how entire communites function.

Ericsson estimates that by 2014, there will be over three billion broadband subscriptions worldwide, of which roughly two-thirds will be powered by mobile broadband(HSPA/LTE). Mobile Broadband (HSPA) has become the most widely deployed and adopted 3G technology ever, with over 280 commercial HSPA networks in almost 120 countries offering a wide variety of services. Furthermore, many more operators have committed to deploy HSPA in the near future.

HSPA/WCDMA provides a single consolidated network for Mobile Broadband and telephony services. Both voice services and internet access, as well as media downloads and mobile TV, are available from the same network.

In this presentation, we will take a look to the basics of WCDMA/HSPA and discuss what it really offers.

GSM Roaming: Some Aspects.

ABSTRACT:

Bill shock

Bill shock was popularized in the telecommunications industry as a term for the negative reaction a subscriber can experience if their mobile phone bill has unexpected charges. Bill shock can happen domestically if a user grossly overuses their data applications without an appropriate data plan, or internationally by using data without understanding the roaming charges involved.

EU Regulation to Reduce Roaming Charges

The plenary of the European Parliament votes on the European Commission's proposal for an EU Roaming Regulation to bring down mobile roaming charges by up to 70%.

Interconnection in telecommunications

Interconnection is central to the development of an effective telecommunications industry. The old monopoly model is in the process of disappearance.

Roaming fraud

Mobile phone services have and will be subject to fraud. Reasons for fraud are explained, as are possible solutions to prevent fraud. Fraud types specific to certain analog and digital mobile phone technologies are presented, as well as broader types of fraud independent of the underlying technologies.
