SPEECH TITLE: "Advances in High-Performance Computing"

SUMMARY:

The field of high-performance computing (HPC) or supercomputing refers to researching, building and using computing systems that are orders of magnitude faster than our common systems. The top supercomputer, known as Frontier at ORNL, can perform in the ExaFLOP range, or over a million trillion calculations. It is even believed that China may have some Exascale supercomputers that are not public. Advances in supercomputing have been very critical as they are shaping up the computing industry and the future of IT and can support advances in many applications of national importance. In this talk we examine the historic progress in HPC over the years and try to understand the related technology trends and implications for the future.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Tarek El-Ghazawi is Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The George Washington University, where he led the university-wide Strategic Academic Program in High-Performance Computing. His research interests include high-performance computing, computer architectures, reconfigurable and embedded computing, nanophontonic based computing. El-Ghazawi has over 300 refereed research publications and his work was funded extensively by such government organizations like DARPA, NSF, AFOSR, NASA, DoD and industrial organizations such as Intel, AMD, HP, SGI. Dr. ElGhazawi has served in many editorial roles including an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions Parallel and Distributed Computing and the IEEE Transaction on Computers. Professor El-Ghazawi is a Fellow of the IEEE and selected as a Research Faculty Fellow of the IBM Center for Advanced Studies, Toronto. He was also awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award, the Alexander Schwarzkopf Prize for Technical Innovation, The IEEE Outstanding Leadership Award by the IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing, and the GW SEAS Distinguished Researcher Award. El-Ghazawi had served as a senior U.S. Fulbright Scholar, was selected an IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Visitors Program Speaker and a Distinguished Visiting Fellow by the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering.

SPEECH TITLE: "AI for Network Traffic Analysis. How NLP can help in understanding internet traffic?"

SUMMARY:

Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have paved the way for powerful algorithms that can classify images, translate text and compose music. However, when it comes to Internet traffic analysis, the use of AI-based solutions has yet to explode. In this talk, I will present some recent advances in using the AI solutions - and in particular NLP-based approaches - to process traffic traces and automatically identify those common patterns followed by coordinated senders, or to identify possible attacks that spammers might be using, even earlier they become alive in the Internet.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Marco Mellia is a full professor at Politecnico di Torino in Italy, where he coordinates the SmartData@PoliTO centre. There, more than 50 researchers work on Big Data, Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligent approaches with applications to different areas, from cybersecurity to predictive maintenance, from anomaly detection to privacy preserving analytics. Marco is co-funder of Ermes Cyber Security SRL, a start-up which provides advanced anti-tracking and web-protection solutions based on Artificial Intelligence. Marco is also coordinating the H2020 PIMCity project focusing on technical solutions to untangle the online ads and privacy ecosystem. Marco is Fellow of IEEE, winner of the IRTF ANR Prize, inventor of 13 patents, and author of more than 250 research articles.

SPEECH TITLE: "Advances in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Data Analysis and Assurance"

SUMMARY:

The volume, disclosure and need for assurance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) data is rapidly growing due to organizations’ strategy, government regulation and other stakeholder requirements. While there are parallels with financial accounting, the variety of sources, categories and standards of ESG data is unprecedented. Advanced analytical and artificial intelligence techniques are integral to the information ecosystem developing around this topic: sustainability materiality assessments; Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions management, goals and reporting; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices, goals and reporting; and dozens of other non-financial sustainability issues. Fortuitously, the present focus on ESG data comes at a time when the explosion of IT, Operational Technology (OT) and “smart” technologies (e.g. smart buildings, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, etc.) allows for applicable near real-time, big data. This talk will outline the state of the art in this evolving area, what’s next and how your research can contribute to this multi-disciplinary topic.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Christopher Geiger is Director of Internal Audit for Lockheed Martin, a Fortune 100 aerospace & defense company with a presence in over 50 countries. In this capacity, he is responsible for leading the development and execution of the corporation’s risk-based internal audit plan. He has been with Lockheed Martin for over 20 years and was most recently the Director of Enterprise Risk and Sustainability where he was responsible for leading the Sustainability and Enterprise Risk Management program strategy, implementation, and stakeholder engagement. Christopher is also on the Board of Directors of Midflorida Credit Union, a $6B+ assets full-service financial institution, and the IEEE Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to transforming lives through the power of technology and education. He frequently publishes and speaks on topics at the intersection of risk, sustainability, and resilience.
Christopher is a Professional Engineering (PE) in Florida and Texas, UK Chartered Engineer (CEng), and a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). In addition, he is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). He received a master's in business administration and bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering and chemistry from the University of Florida.

SPEECH TITLE: "Data and AI-driven Storytelling"

SUMMARY:

Over the last decade, the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) for data analytics have become the mainstream of business intelligence and informed decision making. Sophisticated statistical and algorithmic methodologies, generally known as data science, have been of predominant interest and focus in this context. Yet a fundamental part of such applications is understanding of business use cases and the effective communication of analytical outcomes through compelling visual narratives. In other words, AI-driven data analytics must tell a story. We will review and discuss some key visualization principles and practices for effective data-driven storytelling to target diverse technical and non-technical audiences.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Javid Huseynov has over 25 years of experience as an applied scientist, systems engineer, researcher, and technical leader across major companies, including IBM, Amazon, Disney, and Rockwell. Dr. Huseynov's expertise spans diverse areas of artificial intelligence and computer science, including natural language processing, machine learning, signal processing, recommender systems, and cloud computing. He has authored publications in reputable scientific venues, holds numerous granted patents in the United States, Canada, Australia, and China. In recent years, his research expertise focused on AI/NLP applications for recommender systems in news media and e-commerce. As a lead expert in his field, Dr. Huseynov developed a number of graduate courses for the Applied Analytics program at Columbia University.
Dr. Huseynov received his Ph.D. in Computer Science (2008) from the University of California Irvine. He also holds Masters degrees in Computer Science (1999) and Engineering Management (1998) from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He is a fluent speaker of four languages and holds a red belt in TaekwonDo. Practicing his passion for urban planning, Dr. Huseynov also served the community as a planning commissioner across several municipalities in the U.S.

SPEECH TITLE: "Advancing the Avaricious Discipline"

SUMMARY:

Computing is an avaricious discipline, it has borrowed ideas from virtually every field of human endeavor. IN the process it has seen great success in applying a few basic principles to the ideas that it has acquired. As the field moves to a stage that is more data driven, that is involved in process the billions of events that occur every day, it must needs increasingly look to the problems of robustness, of developing algorithms that can handle sudden and unexpected structural change in a way that includes a systematic self-assessment.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

David Alan Grier has a career in computing that spans both industry and academe, He worked for Burroughs Computer Corporation in Philadelphia on the BSP, the successor to the Illiac IV. He has a Phd in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Washington. He spent thirty years as a professor at the George Washington University in the departments of Computer Science, Statistics, and International Affairs. He has been active in the IEEE Computer Society and has served as EIC of the Annals and Computer, Vice President of Publications and President of the society. He has written five books. His 2006 book “When Computers Were Human” one the prize from the Independent Press Association for the best book of the year on Computing or the Internet. He is currently directing the technology practice for Djaghe International, a Washington DC based consulting firm, and is the EIC for Dalston Press, the company’s publishing house.
